Featured Artist - Francisco Romero
A riot of color is the magnetic force which draws people to the work of El Paso
painter, Francisco Romero. Whether he is working in oils, watercolors or acrylics, the
artist works with the pure pigments, thereby gaining the full vibrance of his palette's
broad color spectrum. "I love working with strong colors", the artist relates.
"It makes me feel good, and people respond to the happiness the works convey."
Romero was born in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and was educated at the University in his
native city. "The course was very demanding", he explains. "We studied not
only the basics of painting, but things like interior and graphic design were also
included in the curriculum. We were even taught the psychology of color - how people
respond to what they see - in order to help us learn how to evoke the emotions which we
wanted to achieve in our work."
As a native of Mexico, the artist is especially fond of portraying the history of his
country in his work. "I am particularly drawn to the period of the Mexican
Revolution. This was an especially difficult time for my people, but they were very brave
and involved with their country. I would have loved to live during that time, and it is
through my art that I am able to do escape back to the past."
It is the love Romero feels for people that shines though his colorful images. "I
like to show their everyday activities and their customs through my work." As the
father of two young children, the artist brings these feelings home, in the sensitive
manner in which he portrays family scenes - especially mothers with their young. His
subtle sense of humor is often apparent in his work as well, imbuing his subjects with
unique personalities. In addition to his people, cats are also a favorite subject.
Multi-talented, Romero also plays the guitar like a professional, frequently writing
his own music. His love for music also frequently spills over onto his canvases which are
filled with band of happy musicians. Whether it is conveyed through his music or his art,
the message is the same. He is a young man in love with life, and this joy shines through
in his colorful view of the world.
