A little bit of information about Ruidoso, New Mexico
The word "Ruidoso" means "Noisy" in Spanish.
Thus, the settlement of Ruidoso
derived its name from the Rio Ruidoso which called out to the Mescalero Indians
as
it rushed down the valley where the community formed. The village is
situated
in
the Sacramento mountain range (the southernmost mountains of the Rockies).
Ruidoso is literally surrounded by desert on all
four sides, and is therefore, a popular
summertime refuge from the desert heat of surrounding cities. These
cities include:
El
Paso, Midland, Odessa, Lubbock, Amarillo, Dallas and Fort Worth in Texas, as
well
as Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Alamogordo, Hobbs and Roswell in New Mexico.
Therefore the principal source of commerce is tourism. The village
population
(based on utility hookups) varies from approximately 8,000 in the winter months
to
almost 100,000 during the summer season. As a matter of fact,
Ruidoso just recently
became second in the state (to Albuquerque) in "Lodger Tax" collections.
Commercial
jet service is to begin in the Spring.
This high activity tourist resort community is
located near "Sierra Blanca", the highest
mountain of the Sacramentos, and is also very near Lincoln, New Mexico, site of
the
famous Lincoln County War - where Billy
the
Kid performed his last jail break and
killed his last deputy. The
other local
attractions include:
Camping and Hiking
Hunting, Fishing, Boating
Skiing (in season)
Gambling (2 casinos)

Golf (5 - 18 hole courses)
Inn of the Mountain Gods
