Katalin Ehling
Born in Hungary in 1941, Ehling moved to the United States in 1950. Her formal art
education was the full program for commercial art at Chicago's American Academy of Art,
followed by a year of study in Paris. After the artist moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1968, she
continued her art education at Phoenix College. It was during that time that she
discovered the wonders of batik and decided to make it her major medium.
Influenced by her European heritage, Ehling often chooses to portray
images of men and women engaged in everyday activities. "These are the eternal
postures of people who live at peace, who repeat the daily routines of life with
perfection, and who are in harmony with nature and themselves, " Ehiling explains.
"Having lived in Arizona for more than thirty years, I have introduced a certain
Southwest flavor to my work, because there are many similarities between life lived in the
Old World and that of the Pueblos. People are close to the land, and activities still take
place according to the rhythm of agriculture.
In addition to her batiks, Ehling also creates original works in watercolor, and has
reproduced her images in the print mediums of lithography, serigraphy and etchings. One of
her most recent accomplishments is the use of her batik images to illustrate her first
children's book, "The Night the Grandfathers Danced", which has received
numerous awards including the prestigious Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy
Hall of Fame and the SPUR Award from the Western Writers of America.
