Over the years, Mark Ploss , who was born and raised in El Paso, has developed a truly intimate relationship with his native region.  Familiarity with the land allows him to see its inherent beauty, and through his art, he now desires to share these insights with others.  Ploss comments,"To many people, the landscape in this area appears to be a vast wasteland, with little to commend it, and they wonder why any one would want to paint it. However, the more time I spend here, the more I see. It is a miraculous, ever changing vista."

"Ever since I was a kid, I've always loved the desert. I would spend days on end just wandering around out in its vast expanses gaining familiarity with the plants, animals and even the insects. I am always captivated by how much the time of day changes the scenery. Early morning light gives you cold colors, and you see more of the grays and blues. By mid-day the light is so strong, that everything appears washed out, and by evening the colors return, bathed in a soft light which emphasizes the pinks and purples in the landscape.

"I especially love painting White Sands. Because of the clear air, sunsets in the desert are always spectacular. In the beginning, the land seems literally aflame with colors, and as the glow begins to fade, the dunes cast the most wonderful shadows. The wind creates ripples and ridges which seem to have a mysterious life all their own."

"Although perhaps fewer in number than in a more verdant region, the plants which grew in the sands are quite unusual and truly a celebration of life. It is very difficult for living things to endure in this harsh environment so their presence provides a moral lesson, reminding us that it is necessary to persevere if you want to succeed.
